Our First House: Entryway and Living Room - Before & After

As any first time home buyer will tell you, the experience can be nerve wracking. After casually looking for a few months, taking a break and then look at about 20 houses in a matter of days, we decided on this cape cod style house. I've been asked how we knew it was the right house for us and the answer isn't that we walked in the door and fell in love with it. Instead, it was more of a calculated decision based on the positives that we liked and couldn't be easily changed: bed & bath count, square footage, garage and a big backyard. The only major con was that it was not very pretty to look at. As you'll see below, the dark brown trim throughout really made the space feel smaller and dated. I love me some amazing woodwork which I would never consider painting, but this my friends, was just cheapo trim that needed a facelift.

This is the view when you walked in the door: stairs going straight up with the living room to the right. These spindles on the half wall really broke up the space and gave it that 70's vibe we were not going for..

It was nice of the bank, who owned this property, to add the brand new carpet throughout.. however this super low-grade beige stained so easily and looked dirty that we couldn't wait to replace it.

Along with the carpet, we also replaced the 'seen better days' parquet floor with wide planked laminate in an expresso color to. We used and were really pleased with their pricing & service.

No more brown trim, what a difference paint makes! Painting trim is not for the faint of hard, so very tedious and took 4 coats of paint. The white sofa & chair are from Ikea, I love that the slip covers are so affordable, we have a couple sets we keep in rotation.

For the large windows, I used a set of sheers and a set of white linen curtains on each window. I really like this setup - the sheers provide the privacy needed but still let in the light.

For the gallery wall, we hung up black and white pictures of places we have traveled. It is a great conversation starter!

Let me know if you have any questions in the comments! Coming up next is the Dining Room and Kitchen Before & After.

  1. Hi Amanda. I love what you did here on the stairs and in the livingroom to rid all of that oak trim. Do you know what your paint colours are?

    1. Hi Carol! Thanks for visiting! The wall color is The Edge of Night and the trim is Ultra White Cabinet & Trim Paint, both by Dutch Boy. Hope this helps! - Amanda

  2. Did you use gloss, semi-gloss, satin, etc.?
